Located about 40 minutes from Sihanoukville off the southern coast of Cambodia in the Bay of Thailand, Koh Rong is truly an undiscovered tropical island paradise — white sandy beaches, warm crystal-clear ocean waters, and a hot tropical climate.
Our hotel was a 5-minute walk up a hill from the beach where we arrived, with a nice view back over the water toward Sihanoukville.
We encountered a few bars and restaurants staffed by young backpacker nomads in exchange for free food and rent. There seemed to be fewer than 100 tourists on the island — more like about 40.
We joined Adam's Adventure for $25 — an all-day boat trip around the island. We visited a fisherman's village, then had lunch on an uninhabited beach with our group of about 20 people representing various countries including France, Argentina, Israel, Mexico, and Belgium.
